Menara Networks Announces Award of OTN “System-in-a-Module” Patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office

San Diego CA, March 24, 2010 — Menara Networks, a vertically integrated optical Ethernet transport specialist and provider of the award winning OTN pluggable transceivers today announces that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the company Patent # 7580637 for its ground breaking OTN “System-in-a-Module” approach that greatly simplifies IP and Ethernet optical transport.

Menara announces today that it was issued United States Patent # 7580637 for its proprietary approach to integrate ITU-T G.709 OTN framing, OAM processing, forward error correction, and other DWDM optical networking functions into various bit-rate, hot pluggable optical transceivers while at the same time preserving and adhering to the Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) aspects of the respective pluggable optical transceiver module. Menara has shipped the industry’s first such product in 2007 in the form of a OTN DWDM XENPAK module and today offers a full array of Telcordia qualified multi-rate and protocol agnostic tunable OTN transceiver modules including its award winning ATLAS XFP product line.

“It is clear to the industry by now that an efficient optical transport of packets not only saves cost, but is imperative to accommodate the explosive nature of IP and Ethernet traffic growth. While several approaches are being pursued in the industry, Menara’s is the most efficient and the only one that completely eliminates a layer of network element from the network. This in turn entails significant capex and opex savings for the operator,” remarks Michael Howards, Founder and Senior Analyst at Infonetics.

“Realizing our “system-in-a-module” vision was a challenging multi-disciplinary approach and we are very pleased with this latest addition to our expanding IP portfolio,” adds Siraj Nour ElAhmadi, Menara’s Co-Founder and CEO. “This is an important patent award for us as it not only covers today’s pluggable technologies such as XFP but also potential future ones covering other rates such as 40 and 100 Gbps as well. Network operators world wide have realized the disruptive economics and greener networking that our solution offers and as a result our products are now deployed worldwide.”

In addition to the OTN pluggable modules, Menara also offers the ARMADA product line; a fully managed 1 RU modular DWDM transport system offering the industry’s most flexible multi 10 Gbps and 10GE transport with integrated ITU G.709 OTN capability, FEC, DWDM mux/demux, EDFA amplifiers, dispersion compensation, SONET/SDH and Ethernet monitoring in 100% pluggable design for lowest first cost.
